One of our favorite things to do here at Theme Park University is to look at what could have been. So many great concepts end up getting cut for various reasons. Anything from budget to licensing to just being impractical, there are more unrealized concepts floating around out there than what actually gets built in a theme park.

Recently a website called Best Kids Stuff has taken several of the abandoned concepts we have covered here at Theme Park University and spruced up the concept art. For example, we covered the Islands of Adventure that Never Was several years ago. In that story, we talked about a dueling coaster themed to the Batman franchise.
Ultimately the attraction never got built because Universal couldn’t strike a deal with Warner Brothers and DC Comics. Eventually, as we all know, that deal went to Six Flags instead.

Then there was this gem of an attraction. Did you know the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man was going to be a Superman ride early on? Yes, during the process where Universal was trying to court DC Comics, this ride was going to be based around the Superman comic books. If you think about it, many of the same story beats and basic structure of the ride can be linked back to Superman. They both work for a newspaper, the idea is to save the New York City and your ride vehicle even “flies” between buildings and skyscrapers.

Finally, Best Kids Stuff did a great job reimagining the concept art for an indoor coaster themed to the Joker. Originally this was proposed for Universal Studios Florida. It would have featured some really fun elements and to have an attraction featured on the Joker would have been amazing!
