Editor’s Note: Universal Orlando has released an official statement about the layoffs that happened today. Click here for that story.
The ax started chopping pretty hard today at Universal Orlando. We started getting reports this morning that layoffs were happening in various departments around the resort. As the day progressed, it seems no park or division was left unscathed.
NOTE: These are current reports coming in from various sources around Universal Orlando Resort. Some are laid off. Some have co-workers who were let go today. Universal has not made an official statement about this yet. However, we have heard this from enough sources that there were indeed layoffs at Universal Orlando today. In some cases, nearly an entire department was let go.
In many cases, these were senior Team Members with over 20 years of history with Universal Orlando before being laid off. While not verified, the cuts seemed to only affect workers who do not deal directly with guests. These are back of house positions such as: marketing, events, secretarial work, operations management and Universal Creative.
Based on how the resort has been doing since reopening, it is thought that these layoffs were not pre-planned. However, due to the low guest turnout, this may be a reaction to soft attendance during what is normally a very busy time of year for the resort. Perhaps Universal Orlando executives expected a higher turnout.
We expect Universal Orlando to make a statement about these layoffs later in the week and will continue to track this story. In addition, we are hearing there is a notice from Human Resources for laid off employees not to engage with the media. This may be the reason the story has not made headlines yet.
