A theme park that has been in the works for nearly 10 years is finally opening its doors in August 2016. How have you never heard of a Marvel theme park before? Well that’s because IMG Worlds of Adventure has had some rocky starts before it got rolling in Dubai. In fairness, this park also has a separate dinosaur section (not tied to a specific intellectual property), as well as a land themed around Cartoon Network. Today, we will focus just on the concept art for the Marvel section.
Something to keep in mind is that this deal was made with Marvel before Disney acquired them in 2009. This means had they not had the rights, who knows if Disney still would have licensed the characters that IMG are now entitled to use? Much like Islands of Adventure, once Marvel signed a contract Disney has to abide by those deals until a new agreement is reached… if both parties agree the terms of the deal should change.
IMG Worlds of Adventure is being built under a giant dome, which is a welcome relief from the heat and sand of the nearby desert.
There are several one-of-a-kind attractions in this Marvel theme park, including Avengers Battle of Ultron, where you’ll be in the middle of the action. Keep in mind, this was project was in development long before the 2015 film was released!
One of the more interesting concepts is this theater in the round concept where images are projected on a giant dome all around you. In Hulk Epsilon Base 3D, you’ll sit in a circular theater where the entire theater can not only spin, but tilt up and down. This will be a first of its kind attraction anywhere in the world.
Spider-Man Doc Ock’s Revenge is a roller coaster attraction where you’ll come face to face with Doctor Octopus. Your job is to help Spider-Man stop him from stealing the city’s energy supply.
I’m going to be honest, I have no idea what kind of attraction Thor’s Thunder Spin is. The description reads: Overload your senses on this dizzying experiment in physics… Be pinned to your seat by the laws of gravity as Marvel’s Thor, the Mighty Avenger, attempts to rescue you from the clutches of Loki, god of Mischief. Perhaps it’s a Gravitron type of ride? Not sure, but the concept art for the entrance looks great.
We will cover more of this park in a future article, but for now, what do you think? Does this rival what Islands of Adventure created over 15 years ago?
