The world’s newest major theme park is set to open August 31, 2016 in Dubai. IMG Worlds of Adventure is a completely indoor park that combines dinosaurs, Marvel characters and the Cartoon Network brand. I got a chance to chat with Dave Schaefer, the Vice President of Falcon’s Creative Group who did the master planning for IMG Worlds of Adventure in addition to attraction and media design prior to the park opening.
“The investment group involved with the project had been working on it for years before we got involved,” remarked Schaefer. They were looking at several options and, once the timing was right, they acquired the rights to use Marvel and Cartoon Network properties within the park and did some preliminary design work.
As Schaefer explained it, the investors for IMG Worlds of Adventure were at a trade show in Asia looking for vendors and potential design partners for the park. This began the negotiations with Falcons Design Group. Originally, they were tasked to create the media for the attractions in the park. However, after looking at the overall scope, they offered to take a stab at the master planning and ended up completely reworking the project to what we will see on opening day.
In total, IMG Worlds of Adventure is a whopping 1.5 million square feet of attractions, dining and shopping all under one roof (literally). The indoor design was to combat Dubai’s extreme heat and even features areas for expansion both within the existing structure and just outside as well. Worlds of Adventure features several new attractions and ride systems which have never been seen in a theme park. Hopefully the powers that be over there will release some of that info within the weeks ahead.
