Couple Charged In Sesame Place Assault Against 17-Year-Old Employee

There has never been a worse time to be a theme park employee than in 2020. On top of your normal duties, you have to do extra cleaning, ensure guests are social distancing and wearing a face covering. At least in one case, if they don’t like the new guidelines you’re told to enforce, you’ll get punched in the jaw and end up in the hospital.

That’s exactly what happened to a Sesame Place employee on August 9th. According to reports, a 17-year-old staff member working the front gate asked a couple to put on a facial covering to enter the park. That’s when the guest decked him, sending him to the ground dislocating his jaw.

Through the use of security camera footage and running the plates on the man’s car, police identified the man and wife as Troy McCoy, 39, and Shakerra Bonds, 31 who live in Bronx, New York.

McCoy faces charges of aggravated assault, which is a felony, as well as misdemeanor offenses of recklessly endangering another person,  disorderly conduct, simple assault, and conspiracy to commit that offense.

The 17-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital for a week where he has surgery on his jaw. There is a GoFundMe Page available for anyone wishing to help contribute to his medical expenses.

Sesame Place has released the following statement: “We want to thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their quick actions and support. We have issued a lifetime ban to the individuals involved for all of our parks across the country. The safety of our team members and guests remains our top priority.”

How has working in a theme park been for you this summer? Is it more challenging than usual? Or are guests generally understanding of the new procedures? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments.
