In 2014, Theme Park University was the first website to break the news about the new Cirque du Soleil theme park coming to Mexico in 2018. I’ve had dozens of inquiries over the last 12 months about this park and many assumed it was cancelled due to the lack of press releases coming out. I am here to tell you that this theme park is very much moving forward and recently some artwork for a Cirque du Soleil water park surfaced on the Goddard Group Facebook Page.
It should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever visited Mexico that the heat is intense during the majority of the year. Pictured above is only a portion of the Cirque du Soleil water park, which will be immaculate and feature several elements that have never been done before.
Meanwhile, I’d like to address the number one question I hear about the Cirque du Soleil theme park: Why Mexico? The answer is actually the building seen in the distance beyond the water park. Vidanta, a luxury hotel company, has several resorts all scattered around Mexico. They are also bankrolling this park.
In 2014, JOYA opened at Vidanta’s resort in Riviera Maya, Cirque du Soleil’s first permanent show to set up residency in Mexico. The show literally sits on Vidanta’s property and was designed exclusively for them in order to bring in resort guests to stay on their property. Before JOYA opened, talks about teaming up with Cirque at another Vidanta property had already started.
Again, the reason why Cirque du Soleil is opening a theme park in Mexico is because of Vidanta. They have the land and the funds. They approached Cirque, who they already have a working relationship with thanks to JOYA and presto! A new theme park started the design phase and a deal was struck. There is much more concept artwork and models to come, but for now, enjoy this Cirque du Soleil water park concept art and hopefully more will surface soon.
