Theme park fans have been skeptical about what a brand like “Avatar” would look like once opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We still have a few years to wait and find out, however, I think a solid litmus test will be to see how Toruk – The First Flight sells tickets when it starts touring North America on Thursday, November 12, 2015.
Toruk is an Avatar-inspired Cirque du Soleil show that has been a collaboration with Lightstorm Entertainment, James Cameron’s film company. The show takes place on Pandora 3,000 years before the movie Avatar, long before humans came to destroy their world. Toruk also utilizes no animatronics or robotics to create the unique animals seen on stage. Instead, they are all one-of-a-kind puppets.
Want to know what the Na’vi people look like complete with tails, blue paint and loincloths? While Disney’s version may not look exactly what is being created for Toruk, it won’t be far off.
Personally, between the sets, costumes and what I know Cirque is capable of, I can’t wait to see this for myself. Was I a huge fan of Avatar? It was just so-so for me. Then again, I had never heard of La Nouba and I have seen that five times now. I trust Cirque, therefore I don’t care what franchise they are using. I’ll pay to see their shows.
At the end of the day, regardless of the brand being leveraged, if Disney creates a landscape of stunning visuals with unique attractions, food and beverage and merchandise, people will flock to it. The pictures above of an Avatar-inspired Cirque du Soleil show look incredible. To find out when Toruk is playing in your city visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/toruk !
