Fact: If you invite me to an attraction that features magicians, I will come running. When Kimberly and Erick Olsen, the owners of Wizardz Magic Theatre in Kissimmee, Florida, contacted me to check out their weekly show, of course I said yes.
For the record, Wizardz is hardly a new show. With nearly 300 performances under their belt, the doors of Wizardz have seen some pretty amazing acts over the years walk through them. This all started with Erick Olsen wanting to run a weekly magic show in Kissimmee back when there weren’t many options to see live magic in Central Florida on a regular basis. “The problem is,” explained Olsen. “After you’ve done this for two weeks, the people that have come back have already seen your A material and you can get to your B and C material pretty quickly.”
As luck would have it, a fellow magician friend of Erick’s gave him a call after Wizardz Magic Theater had been opened for two weeks. “Michael Ammar called me up and said he was going to be in town,” he said. “He asked if he could perform to try out new material. I absolutely said yes, and Wizardz started to get some really great talent coming in every Monday night.”
While you may not recognize the name Michael Ammar, his name in the magic community is huge. Ammar has performed all over the world and has been seen on “The Tonight Show,” “World’s Greatest Magic,” “The Merv Griffin Show” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.” He designs, creates and teaches other magicians his techniques and when he has new material, he goes to Wizardz Magic Theater to test it out.
As luck would have it, Ammar returned to Wizardz to perform and test out some new material on the night of my visit and the show was absolutely fantastic. He performed some magic classics like the linking rings as well as a few tricks I have never seen before. I can’t recommend him enough, so if you ever get a chance to see Michael Ammar perform, please do so.
Theme park fans may also recognize some of the other talent at Wizardz as well. Dana Daniels, my personal favorite comedy magician, has performed there several times. Daniels was a featured performer at the Golden Horseshoe in Disneyland for many years in his own one-man show, as well as a roving performer throughout the park. No doubt he will be performing at Wizardz Magic Theater again and when he does, book a ticket.
In addition, anyone who has seen close-up sleight of hand tricks performed by one of the citizens of Hollywood has seen the incredible Terry Ward. Ward is not only a regular performer at Wizards, but a patron. Most likely, if he’s not on stage, he’s in the crowd enjoying the show.
Which gives Wizardz a unique vibe. Many of the members of the audience are magicians looking to learn new techniques and admire other performers doing what they are most passionate about. Often times, if you’re so inclined, you can buy a ticket to a lecture after the performance giving tips and techniques by magicians who are at the top of their game.
