With the dozens upon dozens of choices at the 2017 Orlando Fringe Festival, I naturally gravitate towards shows featuring theme park-related storylines. Last year The Animatronicans took the festival by storm and sold out nearly every performance. This year, The Spielers sets out to parody that most coveted attractions job: the spieler.
The story for The Spielers is actually fairly simple. Imagine if a knock-off version of Poseidon’s Fury at Islands of Adventure was its own stand alone attraction. This attraction has a similar story, but somehow truly is buried on ancient ruins that could lead to treasure. As luck would have it, a professor has turned the space into an interactive attraction filled with aging special effects, a storyline filled with enough plot holes you could drive a Buick through them, and tour guides who realize that this job may not have been what they signed up for.
The 75-minute play follows the journey of a new recruit for the tour (played by Kyle Masteller), who has just been hired to be a new guide. Like many of us who have taken on the role of spieler for an attraction, our new recruit quickly realizes the job isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. For starters, the tour is showing its age from what he remembers from his youth. Age has taken its toll on the attraction and his fellow spieling co-workers aren’t exactly as excited to be giving the tour as it might have seemed from the guest’s perspective he’s so used to.
Overall, I thought the show was great. It features dozens of jabs at both Universal and Disney, as one would expect. The cast did a fantastic job and I was extremely impressed by the concept art that was shown on the screen above the stage (which set the stage for the backdrop for the fictional attraction).
If you’ve ever had the privilege of spieling for an attraction, I highly recommend snatching up a ticket to The Spielers at the 2017 Orlando Fringe Festival. For me, it was a stroll down memory lane of dealing with all the varying personalities, the drama and the operational realities of working at an attraction required you to deliver the same script over and over and over and over.
