The immersive theater phenomenon that has become New York theater’s best kept secret is branching out into China. That’s right, Punchdrunk (a London based theater company) is bringing Sleep No More east and setting up shop in Shanghai beginning fall 2016.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, immersive theater is a new experiential form of entertainment where the audience has no seats and the actors have no formal stage. Instead, you’re free to explore a true immersive environment filled with unique sets, actors and storylines all while wearing a mask to protect your anonymity. In New York City, the story is set in the McKittrick Hotel. A massive five-story building themed to a film noir hotel in the 1920s.
Shanghai will soon be opening the McKinnon Hotel, a sister venue to the popular New York City version of Sleep No More. Patrons of the show will be able to explore 90 different rooms at their own pace. This incarnation of one of their most beloved and thrilling worlds will uphold Punchdrunk’s signature immaculate production values and intricate detail from the current New York production whilst promising new surprises unique to the Shanghai production.
“Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More first caught the imaginations of an intrepid band of supporters in London back in 2003, when it ran for just 12 performances supported by a tiny Arts Council England grant,” explained Artistic Director Felix Barrett. “Since taking up residency in the McKittrick Hotel in New York, the international reaction to the production has been overwhelming and we’re thrilled to have this wonderful opportunity to premiere our work in Asia for the first time. A project like this is a large undertaking and working with the dedicated team at SMG has been a hugely rewarding cultural exchange. We can’t wait to continue this remarkable adventure with the artists and audiences of Shanghai.”
