Derren Brown: Secret Returns to NYC Fall 2019

My favorite living performer is finally returning to the United States and I couldn’t be more thrilled! In spring 2017, Derren Brown opened his first show at the Atlantic Theater company known as “Secret.” Being a fan of Brown for years and soaking up whatever performances I could online, I made a trip to New York City to see the show for myself.

Not only did it “blow my skull apart,” but I decided to make a second trip to NYC from Florida to see the show again before the end of the run. It was just that good. I’ve seen magicians and mentalists from David Copperfield to Penn and Teller literally dozens of times over the years and to say that Brown surpasses them in every possible way is an understatement.

After my second viewing, I got a chance to chat with him just after the show. Even then, over two years ago, he said there were plans in the works to bring “Secret” to Broadway. Here we are two years later and it’s finally happening!

Something interesting that I noticed is that film director J.J. Abrams (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Star Trek”) is co-producing this show. I have no idea what that could mean for the show itself. However, I am beyond curious to find out how he’s involved in this version of “Secret.”

Without giving too much away, “Secret” dives into the human psyche and questions the stories that we tell ourselves in order to cope with daily life. What I love about Brown’s particular brand of mind reading is how introspective it can be. Never in my life would I have thought that a mentalism/mind-reading show could draw such a roller coaster of human emotion in one show. Both times I watched “Secret” I could literally feel gasps from audience members, witnessed real human tears (of sorrow) and heard plenty of belly laughs. But “Secret” does it every night and it’s gobsmackingly fascinating.

Am I buying tickets to see “Secret” again on Broadway for technically a third (and maybe even a fourth) time? You bet your sweet ass I am. I can’t recommend the show enough. If you’re not familiar with Brown’s work, you can check out his three Netflix specials: “Miracle“, “The Push” and “Sacrifice.” They’ll give you a taste of what he’s capable, but none hold a candle to experiencing him live.
