ScareLA Brings Halloween Early With Panels, Demonstrations and More

With Halloween nearly four months away, fans of haunt season are already itching to get their fix. Luckily, Los Angeles’ ScareLA is a horror convention that will be held on August 9 and 10 to help scratch that itch.

Not big into horror? Theme park fans will be able to meet Disney Legend Alice Davis, widow of Marc Davis (one of Disney’s original “Nine Old Men”) at ScareLA. Davis helped design the costumes for all the animatronic dolls in it’s a small world for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. In addition, she created all the costumes for Pirates of the Caribbean and still occasionally acts as a consultant for the Walt Disney Company.

In addition, Garner Holt will be making an appearance at this year’s event. Holt was recently the recipient of THEA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He has created animatronic characters his entire life, including for places such as MGM Grand Adventures, Disneyland and even Chuck E Cheese. Holt’s most recent work can be found at Knott’s Berry Farm where he freshened up the classic Calico Mine Ride. He is a self-taught animatronics designer, who actually started out in the haunt business as a teenager where he created his own haunted attraction from scratch.

John Murdy will also be doing a presentation this year at ScareLA. Murdy is the Creative Director for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. He will bring some teases for this year’s Halloween Horror Nights as well as give some insight on what it takes to put the event together every year.

There will also be a ton of vendors at ScareLA this year. Among these is “Girls and Corpses.” Think of it like a Maxim magazine but with a horror twist. They will be selling past issues as well as some providing a few sexy photo opportunities, I am sure.

VFX Creative Studios will also have a booth showcasing their zombie puppet line. These beauties come with their own internal sound system that is pre-loaded with four different tracks that can be triggered by controls located inside the puppet. It also comes with a USB attachment so you can create and upload your own brain-eating soundtrack.Copyright ScareLA

Still not convinced? There will also be makeup and effects demonstrations from some of the world’s top horror designers. This year, ScareLA will feature Eric Fox from season four the FX series “Face Off.” Larry Bones (pictured above), head of the Makeup and Monster Department at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, will also be making an appearance.

Still on the fence? There will also be workshops like the one SoCal Valley Haunters will be hosting. For an extra fee (to help pay for materials), they will assist you in building your own tombstone, lantern or rotting hand prop.

If that’s not enough, ScareLA promises at least a half-dozen haunt themed mini-attractions, including a zombie shooting range, freak show and even a mini-maze or two.
