Who Moved My Dole Whip?

An anonymous Theme Park University reader recently wrote in to ask, “I was recently at the Magic Kingdom in Orlando and noticed the dole whip stand was gone! I nearly had a heart attack until a Cast Member told me it had moved to exit of the Tiki Room. Why did Aloha Isle and Sunshine Tree Terrace swap places so suddenly?”

A great question and one that I’ve been seeing online since the change was made on March 12.  In reality, the lines at the now former Aloha Isle (home of the dole whip) across from the Swiss Family Treehouse have been long for many, many years, especially during peak seasons.

That line often extended down towards the Adventureland bridge or to the restrooms near the new sunglasses shop if you entered from the other side.  While the area at the exit of the Enchanted Tiki Room can easily accommodate more people, I don’t think that’s the entire reason the change was made.

Over the past month, many other online websites (not TPU) have posted that there may be a new restaurant opening in the old Adventureland Veranda.  While I am not confirming or denying those rumors are true (I honestly don’t know), the swap actually does give the rumor more weight.

If the Veranda is going to become a full-service restaurant, the previous lines for dole whips would block the entrance.  There is nowhere for guests to go and not block the entrance, unless it’s the middle of the street which is already a difficult spot to navigate with strollers and electric wheelchairs crossing in opposite directions, moving that line to the middle of the street would make it impossible.

Also, if the rumors are true and this restaurant could open by the end of the year (when Liberty Tree Tavern reopens from its refurbishment in November), then it stands to reason we could see some construction walls go up on the outside of the Veranda in the not-so-distant future.

Again, this is all speculation, but it does make sense when you put all the pieces together doesn’t it, anonymous? Hope this helps.
