Once the Comedy Warehouse at Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island closed in September 2008, a small part of me died. No other place on Earth could I watch five completely unique 45-minute improv shows a night, seven days a week. As a result, the “Who, What and Where” improv players got a chance to be extremely polished simply because performing was their full time gig. Very few improv performers can say that.
In the last few years, the cast has reunited for the Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. For a true fan of the old show, it’s euphoria. Most of the performers still work for Walt Disney World and it’s literally “getting the old gang back together.” Those of us who miss Pleasure Island dearly get a brief “fix” before they head into hibernation again until Christmas rolls around again.
In a few weeks, fans of the Comedy Warehouse will have a brief chance to see the show in a way Disney could never present it. “A Night of Perpetual Comedy” will take place on Thursday, June 5 at 9 p.m. at the Parliament House near downtown Orlando. To be clear, this is not sanctioned by Disney and the performers are doing this for charity. So far, the improvers scheduled to appear are Mary Thompson Hunt, Matt Horohoe, Liza Glaze, Mark Lanier and Robby Pigott.
Considering this takes place at an adult venue, this will not exactly be a “Disney friendly” show, so be warned. Also, they will be performing for a good cause, a charity known as Orlando Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. According to Sister Fresnel Lenz, who is responsible for the show, “Over the years, we have grown, but our mission has remained unchanged. We continue to educate the public on safer sex issues, we fight for queer rights and visibility, address women’s issues and the needs of homeless youth, and support other community organizations that share our vision.”
So if you want to relive the good old days of Pleasure Island and support a good cause, drop by the Parliament House on June 5. To purchase tickets or get more information visit http://orlandosisters.org/past-events/night-of-perpetual-comedy-2!
