Our First April Fool’s Day Prank

I just wanted to thank everyone for sharing and supporting our first April Fool’s Day article last week here at Theme Park University.  While most people got the joke, we did get a few “bites,” so I figured I would share with you the clues that were dropped throughout the article to give the readers an idea that this was total bunk.

First of all, the date the article was published on should have been a tip off.

Carousel of Progress

The very idea of Carousel of Progress needing a FastPass is absurd. Sure, Disney has handed out “bonus” FastPasses for attractions that are underutilized for quite some time during peak seasons, but adding them to the list of options is crazy, but just believable enough.

Swiss Family Treehouse FastPass PlusI also need to thank Stephen Krstulich, a friend and reader of Theme Park University who did an excellent job Photoshopping these entrance signs for me.  Some were not used for the article….

People Mover Standby EntranceIt just hit the nail on the head a little too hard. However, there were other clues given throughout that should have given it away for savvy theme park fans.

Ovitz was the second-in-command for the Walt Disney company from 1995 to 1997. After a rocky, short-lived tenure, he departed from Disney and hasn’t been involved with the Mouse since.

Screen Shot 2015-04-05 at 11.55.08 AMTom Williams is actually the CEO for Universal Parks and Resorts and has for many years. He is not affiliated with Disney in the slightest.  Finally, I literally spelled out April Fools in the article.  No, seriously… starting with the first letter of each paragraph at the top of the page… follow with me…

That’s right, it was spelled out for anyone who was looking for the answer. I do this not to pat myself on the back, but rather to make sure people aren’t storming Guest Relations and writing letters asking why Disney would do such a silly thing.

OK…ok…rub it in! LOL! Though I’m not savvy enough to catch names, the photos are what got me. I looked…examined…studied and then looked once more just to make sure the signs weren’t photoshoped. Damn they’re good!!! Seriously…those signs were awesome! Would the lack of ANYONE else posting comments tip me off!? Nope! Later that day, I shared it with some of my friends who had the same reaction. I felt better knowing it wasn’t just me but it could also indicate that like minds cluster together!! 😀

Though your comment on the post tipped me off that it fooled people, you were far from the only one. I sent it to several friends of mine who had no idea I was doing this and literally all of them bought it. In addition, I am a part of a private chat group about theme parks and I saw someone posted that they saw my article and also thought it was crazy that the company would offer a FastPass because they thought guests might need exercise. That comment tipped me off, more than anything, that I needed to make sure people knew it was a joke. It wasn’t just you who bought it, I promise!

Michael Ovitz tipped me off. Blast from the past. This might be an April Fool’s joke, but I do think Disney will add more Fastpass at the Magic Kingdom. This park has the most rides of any Disney theme park in Orlando, but getting Fastpass attractions are limited due to demand. They need to alleviate demand and what better way then encourage people to ride PeopleMover.

As someone who does some humor writing myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the piece. And I learned long ago to watch for April 1, so I didn’t fall down that particular rabbit hole.

However, I have to really pat you on the back/give you a high-five/order drinks for the house/shout “I am not worthy” for the way you spelled out April Fools with the initial letters of each paragraph. I didn’t see it, it was an incredible clue, and you did it seamlessly.

Well done. And keep up the great work.
