Having recently been on Smuggler’s Run at Galaxy’s Edge, I was extremely impressed with how high tech this new attraction is. Being able to render graphics in real-time on to a huge dome screen is pretty impressive. Considering that this attraction is essentially a live-action video game meant Smugglers Run needed more computing power than any other ride before it.
This technology was highlighted in a presentation recently given at SIGGRAPH ( Association of Computing Machinery‘s Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques) 2019. Given by Bei Yang, Technology Studio Executive for Walt Disney Imagineering, he discusses the challenges of creating Smuggler’s Run and the computing power behind it.
While this goes far beyond my area of expertise, it’s pretty fascinating to know just how much computing and gaming power that went into the attraction. He even brought along examples of how the five projectors work in tandem at his presentation. Even more impressive, he gave a pretty sharp look at a few sequences from Smuggler’s Run for the crowd at SIGGRAPH.
The presentation at SIGGRAPH 2020 needs to be seen to fully understand just how advanced Smuggler’s Run is. Check out the video below (not mine) and enjoy!
