Immersive Sound Show – The Encounter – Opens on Broadway for Limited Run Fall 2016

No doubt, for better or worse, theme park fans remember a show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios called Sounds Dangerous starring Drew Carey. While it never became any kind of a smash hit, the technology behind the show was actually very cool. However, surrounding the audience with total darkness for over 90% of the show proved to be underwhelming in a theme park environment.

Smaller versions of the same technology, known as binaural sound, could be found in the post show at the ABC Sound Studio, as well as inside Rafiki’s Planet Watch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Who could forget when Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln also featured wireless headphones that also featured this new unique sound? Just when you thought the technology was dead in the water, out comes the Goddard Group producing The Encounter opening this fall on Broadway.

In this show, audience members wear headphones and are treated to a live performance using holophonic sound (which apparently is what Disney also used in it’s theme park shows, just a different term). From the press release:

The Encounter

“Through the use of innovative aural technology and virtuosic storytelling, Simon McBurney leads you on an epic journey from the intimacy of his home in London to deep into the Amazon rainforest. The Encounter tells the true story of National Geographic photographer Loren McIntyre lost in a remote area of Brazil in 1969, which leads to a startling encounter that is to change his life. But it simultaneously plunges you into a visceral inner voyage. As McIntyre’s mesmerizing tale reaches its climax, this extraordinary performance asks some of the most urgent questions of today: about how we live and what we believe to be true.”
