If I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times: immersive theater is the most fascinating movement in themed entertainment in recent years. Instead of sitting in a seat and watching the action from a distance, you’re in a space where the line is blurred on where the actors and patrons can interact. Sometimes, this means the actors can breach your comfort zone to the point of it being uncomfortable.
Which brings me to Zombie Joe’s Underground Theater. Urban Death: Tour of Terror has become a Halloween tradition in Hollywood to turn their small theater into a unique blend of haunted maze and live performance art.
Guests are ushered in six times a night through various showtimes into the lobby of theater. The lobby has turned into a mini haunt maze and guests are pulsed through in small groups. What lies inside? Hard to say and more importantly, it would spoil the surprise. Suffice it to say you’ll experience moments of terror, titillation and even a few “WTF”s thrown in for good measure.
From there, guests gather in the main theater for a fifteen-minute presentation which is mostly in the dark. Actors get within uncomfortably close proximity to patrons and are subjected to disturbing and perhaps unsettling scenes.
Which brings me to, this haunt is not designed for kids. Sure, your little one might be bold enough to watch all the “Saw” films, but this is a different type of terror that’s very much in your face and certainly geared towards adults. Use caution when buying tickets.
After the theater presentation is over, audience members enter through the haunted maze set up in the lobby. However, it has changed. There are all new elements, scenes and scares that can literally leave guests running out of the building!
