Spooky Empire Pays Tribute To The Haunted Mansion

Spooky Empire kicked off it’s annual convention celebrating all things horror yesterday just across the street from the Universal Orlando. Before guests even entered the DoubleTree Hotel they were treated to the Hearse & Creepy Car Show in the parking lot.

In addition to unique cars like a coffin hot rod, there were about a dozen or so hearses that were decked both inside and out. Some even had full scenes inside.

Spooky Empire has plenty of celebrity guests covering an entire spectrum of the horror genre from movie stars to make up artists. Last night, Dee Snider from Twisted Sister introduced his film Strangeland and answered questions from the audience.

In every corner of the convention center it seemed that there was something constantly going on. Even out by the pool, Dale Henry did two speed paintings in under five minutes of classic horror movie monsters.

You didn’t even have to walk into the convention halls or see any presentations to get your fix of eye candy. There were tons of people dressed up in their favorite horror movie cosplay like Adam and Barbara Maitland from Beetlejuice.

Or a sexy version of Jigsaw from the Saw films!

There were even some great Walking Dead costumes!

The winner of Sunday’s costume contest at Spooky Empire was this gentleman who did an absolutely incredible Beetlejuice costume.

However, for me the highlight of Spooky Empire 2013 was MuckleBones tribute to the Haunted Mansion.

An entire convention room at the DoubleTree was dedicated to well over a dozen figures and scenes that paid tribute to what many consider to be the greatest dark ride of all time.

While the scenes aren’t laid out exactly like Disney’s Haunted Mansion, that’s kind of the point. It’s an artistic interpretation, not a recreation.

Spooky Empire and MuckleBones set up a maze, of sorts, almost laid out like a wax museum.

As you rounded every corner, there was another classic scene from the Haunted Mansion.

Spooky Empire even had a fantastic recreation of the hatbox ghost!

It was more than just figures. Each scene was covered with unique props and antiques.

I spent nearly 45 minutes going through on two separate occasions to soak in all the details.

In this version, the bride and groom finally get to have their first dance as a “couple”.

MuckleBones even had a small tribute to Haunted Mansion Holiday with a fantastic Jack Skellington figure standing next to a jack-o-lantern tree.

Just before you left the convention hall, Ezra, Gus and Phineas were looking to hitch a ride and follow you home!
