Support The Dark Ride Project

If you’re a fan of this site, most likely you’re a fan of dark rides. As a fan of theme parks, we know all too well that attractions can come and go within the blink of an eye. New construction, bankruptcy, disrepair and more can lead to a classic attraction closing. For years now, people have been creating digital versions of extinct theme park attractions from Journey Into Imagination to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Recently, a unique form of theme park preservation came to my attention: The Dark Ride Project.

The idea is pretty simple. 360 degree cameras are set up and rigged to a dark ride vehicle and filmed several times in order to get the best shots in various light levels. Later, they are edited together to create a virtual reality experience allowing viewers to “ride” these pieces of history using technology like Samsung VR and Oculus Rift.

Check out the video above for an example of what it might be like.

Some of these rides have already been filmed. In the long term, The Dark Ride Project would like to have a virtual reality TV show showcasing the experiences of these attractions and their history. If you’re able to spare a little bit of money to help the project, visit this link and check out the great things these guys hope to accomplish.
